How to Listen to Podcasts
The purpose of this article is to help those of you who aren’t familiar with podcasts learn how to listen to them so that you, too, can benefit from the treasure trove of information available free to everyone.
Podcasts are basically like radio shows that you can listen to at your convenience. In the last few years, podcasting has grown in popularity. Mobile device users often listen to podcasts while exercising, driving, or doing mindless tasks. There are thousands of podcasts available online on a wide variety of topics.
Audio podcasts, such as The Prosperity Show, are basically MP3 files that can easily be downloaded to any computer or listening device such as a smart phone, MP3 player, or tablet.
Although some podcasters charge a subscription fee, most programs are available at no cost.
Where to Find Podcasts
One of the most popular outlet for podcasts is iTunes, which comes pre-installed on Mac computers and mobile devices and can be installed on PCs.
There are apps that can be used with Android devices that enable you to transfer files from iTunes to your device.
Many podcasts are also found on podcast hosts websites, the same way that The Prosperity Show is on ProsperityPlace.com.
Stitcher.com is also a popular source for podcasts. I like Stitcher because I don’t have to download any files. I can just go to Stitcher and choose a podcast episode I want to listen to. You can download the Stitcher app for your mobile device or as an add-on for your browser. I use it on Chrome and Firefox. For a beginner, this is a good way to start.
You can also search for podcasts on Google or Bing by entering a podcast name, a category + podcast, or the host’s name + podcast. (eg: business podcast, Joan Sotkin podcast)
Podcasts are also available via software called Feed Readers. The one I use is Feedly which is used for both blogs and podcasts. A Feedly app is available for mobile devices.
If you haven’t used iTunes before, here’s a good article about how to install it on a PC.
If you don’t have a mobile device you can install iTunes on your PC and listen in iTunes to any podcast episode without downloading the file. You can also download the file and add to an MP3 player.
Once in iTunes, click on iTunes Store. Then, on the top bar, click on Podcasts. You can search for podcasts by name, such as The Prosperity Show, by category, such as prosperity, or using a person’s name..
Scroll down the results page until you see Podcasts. Be sure to put your mouse over the bottom of the images. You’ll see a scroll bar that lets you view other podcasts. Or click the link on the upper right that says See All.
When you see a podcast that interests you, click the image. You will be taken to a page that lists all of the episodes. You can listen here by putting your mouse over the episode number and clicking the arrow.
To leave a rating or review, click the tab that says Ratings and Reviews. Click the star for a rating.
If you click the Subscribe button, podcast episodes are listed in your Podcast section, which you can access by clicking on Podcasts on the sidebar. You can download a file by doing the following:
- On the upper bar, you’ll see Unplayed, My Podcasts , My Stations, and List. (If you don’t see the sidebar, go to Edit/Show Sidebar.)
- Click My Podcasts. You will see a list of shows you have subscribed to. If you click on one of the covers, on the right you’ll see a list of episodes. If you want to see old episodes, on the top right, click Old Episodes. When you see one you want to listen to, click the grey circle on the right of the episode. The circle will change to a blue checkmark.
- To download, go back to the List view and click the down arrow next to a title.
